Why do dogs smell funny when they get wet?

A clean dog doesn’t smell funny when wet, but being really clean all the time is not heathy.
You hair smells funny if it is not clean, when wet.
A dog has lots of healthy oil and normal dirt in all of his fur, and it smells when wet.

That is an excellent question! I don’t really know the answer except to say that they do not have sweat glands, and perspire through their mouths, so maybe excess sweat under the skin builds up after lots of activity and generates the smell? I really wish I knew! I’ll be checking out the other answers. I also find that they smell stronger after a wicked romp and the reason is probably the same. The smell always subsides after they calm down. Also, they don’t smell like that after a bath, it’s only after getting wet during exercise or after running around dry.
